GOOD Statement by Robin Hendrikse,
GOOD Stellenbosch Municipality Councillor
07 July 2026
The GOOD Party in Stellenbosch commends the swift actions of the South African Police Service (SAPS) following Sunday’s dramatic shootout at a chain store in Newinbosch, which resulted in the arrest of five-armed suspects linked to an attempted business robbery.
The bravery and quick response of the officers involved undoubtedly prevented what could have been a far more tragic outcome. We are particularly relieved that no innocent shoppers or employees lost their lives and wish the injured police officer a speedy recovery.
However, this incident once again shines a harsh spotlight on a reality many residents know all too well: crime in Stellenbosch is becoming increasingly brazen, violent, and organised.
A town celebrated internationally for its beauty, tourism, and first-world appeal is simultaneously home to communities that live in constant fear of armed robberies, home invasions, and violent crime. Behind the postcard image of Stellenbosch lies an uncomfortable truth – many residents no longer feel safe in their homes, workplaces, or businesses.
The attempted robbery in Newinbosch, a rapidly growing development on the doorstep of Khayamandi and the Stellenbosch CBD, demonstrates that no area is immune to criminal activity.
While we applaud SAPS for their rapid response and the successful arrests, reaction alone cannot be our only strategy. The frequency and sophistication of these crimes demand a far stronger emphasis on intelligence-led policing and proactive crime prevention.
The GOOD Party therefore calls on SAPS and all relevant stakeholders to:
- Sharpen and strengthen intelligence-gathering capabilities to identify and disrupt criminal networks before they strike;
- Increase visible policing and targeted operations in identified hotspots;
- Strengthen collaboration between SAPS, municipal law enforcement, private security companies, and neighbourhood watches;
- Prioritise the investigation and prosecution of organised and repeat offenders; and
- Ensure that those responsible for violent crimes face the full might of the law.
Criminals must know that Stellenbosch is not open for business to organised crime.
The safety of our residents, workers, and visitors cannot be compromised. Economic growth, tourism, and investment mean very little if the people who call this town home continue to live behind security gates and burglar bars, uncertain of what tomorrow may bring.
The GOOD Party remains committed to working with communities and law enforcement agencies to ensure that every resident of Stellenbosch can live, work, and raise their families without fear.
