GOOD Statement by Chantelle Kyd,
GOOD George Councillor
31 October 2025
The GOOD Party is calling out the shameless hypocrisy of two former DA councillors, now campaigning under the Patriotic Alliance banner, who are suddenly pretending to care about the very issues they rejected, mocked, or stayed silent on when they had the chance to do something real in Council.
Just one month ago, GOOD tabled a motion calling for urgent relief for backyard dwellers. The motion included practical solutions of an immediate suspension of fines issued to backyard dwellers and a support programme to help them comply with regulations at little or no cost. The DA caucus, including these very councillors, blocked it. They mocked it. They voted against it.
The DA’s Deputy Mayor claimed the Municipality was “already busy with what the motion recommends”, yet when asked when action would come to Council, no answer was given. No action has followed. Backyard dwellers are still receiving threatening letters about evictions.
Today, these same councillors are campaigning on the plight of backyard residents and expecting the public to forget their record.
The same goes for the tragic building collapse. GOOD pushed for accountability and fought for justice and ultimately led to our withdrawal from a coalition agreement and an MMC position.
The same goes for tenders and contractor abuses, which GOOD has repeatedly exposed, councillors defended the very practices they now condemn.
This sudden transformation is not driven by integrity or empathy. It’s driven by political convenience and opportunism.
GOOD has been consistent in fighting for backyard dwellers, demanding accountability for building failures and calling out irregular tenders and contracts.
Not only during campaign season but when real decisions were on the line.
Residents deserve leaders who stand up when it matters, not only when it’s politically useful.
