GOOD Statement by Brett Herron,
GOOD Secretary-General
24 October 2024
The GOOD Party would like to thank its supporters who came out in the George Ward 20 By-election. For now, the ward remains in the control of the Patriotic Alliance.
The ward, which was previously represented by the PA, became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation to join the DA.
As GOOD we remain concerned about the allegations of intimidation and the distribution of food and drugs as bribes in the run-up to elections.
We are unwilling to compete by exploiting socioeconomic realities in a community such as deep-rooted poverty, crime and substance abuse.
The GOOD Party remains committed to ensuring elections are held in a free and fair environment.
The present system that relies on political parties to police each other doesn’t work.
Parties should not be allowed to pay inducements and the environment in which elections take place, beyond the polling station perimeter, need independent monitoring, and policing.
We have written to the Chief Electoral Officer to request a discussion at the next National Political Party Liaison Committee meeting. We need to eradicate these violations of the Electoral Act and of basic human dignity. The IEC needs to be better empowered to ensure elections are free and fair.
GOOD remains deeply committed to bringing social justice and real change to our communities.
