The GOOD Party in George condemns this morning’s attack on the Go George Bus service which is understood to be the result of a “petrol bomb”.
At least 11 passengers had to be transported to hospital with various injuries following the attack in Ward 16 in New Dawn Park. We want to express our sincere sympathies to those affected and we wish all victims a speedy recovery.
We would like to appeal to the Mayor of George to put his politics aside and bring all transport stakeholders together for a constructive and inclusive discussion.
All the political parties in George, as well as community leaders and relevant role-players should be allowed to make a contribution in order for us to find broadly accepted transport resolutions that can take us all forward.
The people of George were promised a safe, reliable and efficient transport service – hence the introduction of the Go George service.
However, this is not what our communities are currently getting. Many commuters in parts of George have been left without the proper infrastructure to support a well-functioning public transport service. For years they have simply been expected to stand in the rain and wind while waiting and no one seems to care.
We call on the Mayor to review the consultation system currently in place and allow for a more inclusive and therefore effective approach to proceed.
We therefore also call on possible aggrieved stakeholders to not resort to violence that puts the lives of our people at risk. We need to work together as a community.
The bus system should be uplifting and enhancing our communities, not dividing.
Finally, GOOD calls for swift action by the police to bring those responsible to book.
