GOOD Statement by Chantelle Kyd ,
GOOD George Councillor
27 February 2025
The GOOD Party in George is calling for the findings of the May 2024 Building Collapse investigation to be tabled in council.
In today’s ordinary council meeting the Disaster Management Plan for the 2025/2026 financial year was approved by a majority vote. It is a Legislative requirement that the Plan be reviewed annually and approved by Council. However GOOD argues that we cannot approve the new plan without addressing the biggest man-made tragedy to impact our municipality.
A month ago, the Western Cape Premier Alan Winde handed over the independent structural engineering findings to the Western Cape Police Commissioner Thembisile Patekile and the lead investigator Johan de Lange. But so far, we have seen no outcomes or actions based on the findings. GOOD calls on the Mayor to get the report from the Premier and to table it in council. By reviewing the findings we can prevent further incidents of this nature from occurring in the future.
The findings will also give much-needed closure to the families of the victims. It has been almost 10 months since the tragedy took 34 lives and seriously injured many others. The collapse and the days that followed will forever be in our memory.
We need a Disaster Management Plan that has a well-defined and cohesive municipal response to incidents affecting our area.
