GOOD press statement by Rosa Louw ,
GOOD George Municipality Councillor
29 November 2024
The GOOD Party calls on the Democratic Alliance to confirm if one of their George councillors is facing an assault charge by a member of the community.
An alleged victim has approached GOOD and accused DA councillor, Justin Fry of assault and aggravated assault.
He claims that on the night of the 9th of November, he got into a verbal argument with Fry at a local Pub. The argument quickly escalated into a physical fight which resulted in a hospital visit.
The victim further alleges that Fry followed him to the hospital and continued the assault, resulting in a nurse calling the police.
At the hospital, the police opened a case of assault and aggravated assault.
Apparently, the case has already been before the magistrate but was postponed until December, as the medical records are outstanding. The magistrate revealed that Fry has subsequently filed counter charges against the victim.
The allegations of a councillor attacking a community member are serious and the DA should be open and transparent with the residents of George.
As GOOD we demand to know what action the DA is taking against Fry.
As councillors, we are duty-bound to protect the residents of George, not attack them.
Speaking to GOOD the victim said “As hulle hiermee wegkom, aan hoeveel mense sal hulle dit doen? Hulle moet nie hiermee wegkom nie. Hy is deur die gemeenskap daar geplaas vir die gemeenskap. Nou tree hy teen die gemeenskap op.”
{ENG: If they get away with this how many people will they do this to? They shouldn’t get away with this. He was put there by the community for the community. Now he is acting against the community}
This is the municipality where the DA’s Deputy Mayor was accused of extorting sexual images from a teenager and despite a damning report by the DA’s Federal Legal Council, Raybin Figland was cleared by the DA-led council and the DA.
GOOD will continue to hold councillors to account, even if their own party, turns a blind eye to misconduct.
