Findings from an investigation into the death of an elderly wheelchair-bound resident at Huis Maudie Kriel paint a concerning picture of the state of social services in South Africa.
The 81-year old died last month at the old age home in Ceres after allegedly being left outside the facility overnight while taking a smoke break.
Following an internal investigation, six staff members have been found guilty of misconduct. According to ACVV Huis Maudie Kriel, different sanctions have been imposed, ranging from final written warnings, compulsory attendance of further training sessions and dismissal.
It was also found that a student carer, who did not from part of disciplinary processes, pushed the resident to the outside smoking area and did not inform staff that she was still outside when her shift ended.
Subsequent developments linked to a lack of oversight and failed procedures allowed the elderly woman to fall through the cracks and remain outside in the cold.
Following the shocking incident, GOOD visited Huis Maudie Kriel to inspect the site and understand what transpired. We welcome the recommendations in the findings that all procedures and record keeping need to be reviewed by the Management and compliance be strengthened.
However, we remain extremely concerned about the ability of various community stakeholders to perform their duties to protect our most vulnerable citizens.
Social services are often the last line of care for the frail and vulnerable in a society where inequality and economic disparity are furthering the gorge between the rich and the poor.
This incident is a stark reminder of the state of social care in society and how it affects our lives, and those who depend on us, daily.
