Expelled Members: GOOD Welcomes High Court Victory

19 May 2023

GOOD Statement by Brett Herron
GOOD Secretary-General & Member of Parliament

19 May 2023

The GOOD Party welcomes the decision of the Western Cape High Court to strike two applications, challenging the outcome of independent disciplinary hearings, off the roll with costs.

Mr Shaun August (former Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament and National Organiser) and Ms Felicity Klazen (former Councillor and Deputy Mayor of Witzenberg) were expelled from GOOD last week.

This followed a year-long investigation, and meticulous and independent internal disciplinary processes which found both of them guilty of serious misconduct and bringing GOOD’s reputation into disrepute.

Today they attempted to bring urgent applications seeking to interdict the party from removing them.

Late yesterday afternoon, GOOD was served with high court papers attempting to not only set aside the expulsions, but also interdict the party from replacing them in the Western Cape Legislature Witzenberg Municipality respectively.

After hearing arguments in the matter, the court expressed displeasure with the manner in which the applications were brought and struck both applications off the roll, with costs.

The decision to expel a member is never easy and never taken lightly. We are looking forward to moving on from this chapter and will announce our replacement public office bearers in the next few days.

Today’s ruling affirms GOOD’s commitment to fairness and integrity and we welcome that court processes cannot easily be abused.

We hold all of our members, regardless of seniority, equally responsible for maintaining the movement’s integrity in order to build a credible, trustworthy alternative for South African voters.
