The GOOD party welcomes the appointment of the new Eskom board at a critical time in South Africa.
In particular we welcome the inclusion of technical and engineering skills alongside those with financial management and business leadership experience.
While the appointment of the new board is a regularity requirement, and not related to the country’s energy supply crisis, the appointment of strong technical skills and experience must strengthen Eskom’s strategy to eliminate loadshedding and ensure that our country has a stable and sufficient supply of electricity.
South Africa has endured 15 years of loadshedding – more than enough time to fix the supply shortage – and all of us will be relying on the new board and Eskom’s management to find the fastest way to end it.
We are all running out of patience and the board will have to move quickly to demonstrate that it is totally focussed on ending loadshedding and preparing South Africa for an energy future that is increasingly renewable and clean, and where the transition is just.
We congratulate Mr Mpho Makwana on his appointment as Chairman of the Eskom Board and thank him, and the new board members, for agreeing to serve at this critical time.
We wish them well. The people of South Africa, our economy and our development, have our futures in their hands.
