GOOD Statement by Keagen Gertse ,
GOOD Drakenstein Councillor & Caucus Whip
22 November 2024
The GOOD Party in Drakenstein Municipality lodged a motion requesting to investigate DA Speaker Koos Le Roux and ward Councillor Brenda van Willingh.
This motion stems from our earlier calls for an investigation into DA ward councillor Brenda van Willingh, following allegations of corruption and unethical conduct.
Our initial complaint against van Willingh was regarding allegations of corruption, maladministration and unethical governance relating to stipends that were meant to be paid to soup kitchen personnel but instead were allegedly refunneled to the banking accounts of van Willingh’s daughters.
Additionally, it is alleged that food intended for the soup kitchen was delivered to Councillor van Willingh’s residence for personal use.
GOOD believes the Speaker misled the council and the public when he stated that he was only informed of the allegations against van Willingh, when GOOD submitted a complaint to his office on the 5th of November.
It has come to light, that on the 18th of September, members of the community came to the Office of the Speaker to lodge a formal complaint.
As the Speaker was not available the issue was discussed with a member of the council’s support staff.
He alerted van Willingh of the complaint against her and instructed her to immediately email the Speaker.
If van Willingh did as she claimed, Le Roux has had knowledge of the allegations for almost 2 months and failed to act.
GOOD believes this inaction is a reflection of an abuse of privilege to shield DA interests within the municipality.
Soup kitchens, on ward level, are prone to political interference with ward councillors playing a major role in dishing out employment.
We cannot allow politicians to abuse a system for their own benefit and essentially utilise soup kitchens as platforms to play party political games.
The GOOD Party is requesting an independent investigation be conducted to probe soup kitchens across Drakenstein, their funding and employment model and to what extent, if any, ward councillors interfere in their operations.
If the DA majority has nothing to hide, they will support GOODs proposal of an investigation.
GOOD is committed to ensuring the DA-led Drakenstein takes accountability for their actions.
The disadvantaged people of Ward 14 deserve answers from those they trusted to lead.
