DA THREATENS WORKERS IN SALDANHA FOR CHOOSING GOOD

SPEECH TO WESTERN CAPE PROVINCIAL PARLIAMENT BY BRETT HERRON, GOOD MEMBER AND SECRETARY-GENERAL

10 SEPTEMBER 2020

GOOD WARD CANDIDATE LAYS CRIMINAL CHARGES AGAINST DA SPEAKER

Speaker, the use of municipal jobs as a tool for intimidation or reward for party political support is the cruellest form of politics.

It’s a form of cronyism rife in municipalities in this province and there is no political will to stop it – because its used by DA run governments too.

Municipal employment, and EPWP opportunities, are being used to intimidate or coerce people to support the DA in the Saldanha Municipality where the DA must defend a ward in a by-election in November.

The DA Speaker and the DA ward councillor candidate have threatened EPWP workers that they will lose their opportunities for choosing to support GOOD.

The DA Speaker has even threatened a permanent employee of the Saldanha Municipality.  This employee has signed an affidavit which says:

“I was also active within the DA structure in Vredenburg Ward 13, and served on the Branch Executive.  Two months ago, I decided to resign from the DA and carry my freedom of association and became a member of the Good Party…”

“Since I made this decision, my work has been threatened by the DA Speaker of the Saldanha Bay Municipality…”

“I further state under oath that my work has been threatened because I joined the GOOD Party.  It was clear that the speaker was unhappy about my decision, it was also clear that she was prepared to use my employment as a weapon against me.”

The DA Candidate, who is not an employee or a manager at the Municipality, nor is he a councillor, has colluded with the Speaker to threaten the EPWP opportunities of those who have decided to leave the DA.  The affidavit goes on:

The following person that called me in was the DA Candidate for Ward 13 in Vredenburg Mr Schaffer

In this meeting he informed me that he had met with the Speaker and a decision was taken that all Good members working in the Municipality whether on EPWP projects or permanently employed is now at risk.”

What kind of leaders are those who threaten the most vulnerable people, with the loss of their precarious short-term employment opportunity, for choosing to exercise their democratic political rights?

They do not belong in office.

We have laid criminal charges against the DA Speaker.

The Minister has two positions of authority – he can act as the MEC for Local Government against this rogue Speaker and this intimidation.  He can act as politically as the Chairperson of the DA in the Province and have her removed from office. What will he do?
