DA MISMANAGEMENT COSTS GEORGE OVER R100 MILLION IN LOST TREASURY FUNDING

GOOD Statement by Rosa Louw

GOOD George Municipality Councillor

27 November 2025

It is with deep concern that I address the continued failure of the George Municipality, under the leadership of the Democratic Alliance (DA), to manage funds allocated by the National Treasury responsibly.

The National Public Transport Grant- a conditional grant intended to upgrade critical infrastructure- has once again gone unspent. This is now the second time George Municipality has failed to apply the funding towards the George Integrated Public Transport Network (GIPTN). As a direct result, more than R100 million has been forfeited. This money will not be recovered, and our communities are paying the price.

The Mayor and the Municipal Manager must take full responsibility for this dereliction of duty. Their failure reflects not only poor service delivery but a complete disregard for the interests of the people of George. Instead of prioritising residents, the DA has placed its own political interests above community needs.

This mismanagement has real and immediate consequences:

  • Much-needed job creation has been undermined.
  • Critical infrastructure upgrades, including roads and water systems, have stalled.
  • Communities such as Haarlem and Uniondale remain excluded from the Go George bus service due to the municipality’s financial failures.

The GOOD Party stands for accountable governance and stronger internal municipal capacity. Yet the DA continues to hollow out the administration by outsourcing essential services, enriching consultants instead of building in-house expertise. George should be filling posts, strengthening skills, and reducing unemployment, not outsourcing its future.

The people of George deserve better: a government that manages public funds responsibly and delivers on its promises.

It is time for residents to recognise that meaningful change is overdue.
