DA HOSTS FUNDRAISER AT CITY-SPONSORED COMEDY FESTIVAL – IS THE JOKE ON RATEPAYERS?

The GOOD Party is calling on the City of Cape Town to come clean about its involvement with the Cape Town Funny Festival. It has come to our attention that the DA Cape Town Metro Region is hosting a fundraiser at the Funny Festival on the 5th of June. Notably, the City of Cape Town, where the DA holds a majority, is one of the Festival’s main sponsors. In other words, the DA is piggybacking onto a City-funded event to raise money for the party, effectively using ratepayers’ money to bankroll a political gathering. This isn’t just unethical, it’s a textbook case of abusing public resources for party benefit. It blurs the line between governance and campaigning in a way that should concern every Cape Town resident.

Tickets for the DA’s fundraiser range from R180 to R250, with the entire show closed for external bookings. The Festival itself offers discounted block bookings between R160 and R250. This raises a serious question: If the DA is charging standard prices for a fundraiser, are they only making R20 per ticket , or have they received a special rate thanks to their political ties and the City’s sponsorship?

Transparency is non-negotiable when public funds and political activities overlap. Is the DA using taxpayer money, funnelled through a City-sponsored event, to fundraise for the upcoming local elections?

The GOOD Party calls for a full and immediate investigation into this matter and for those responsible to be held to account. If the DA wants to host a fundraiser, they should do it with their own money, not the ratepayers.
