GOOD Statement by Jonathan Cupido,
GOOD City of Cape Town Councillor & Caucus Whip
24 May 2025
The GOOD Party has submitted an official letter to the Cape Town City Manager demanding an urgent investigation and accountability following deeply concerning revelations about the DA using a City-sponsored event, the Cape Town Funny Festival, for a political fundraiser. Despite multiple attempts to seek clarity from the responsible City official, we have been met with evasion and an outright refusal to provide answers.
The DA’s planned fundraiser on 5 June, hosted during a festival supported by R600,000 public funds, raises serious ethical and legal questions. The City’s Events Policy explicitly prohibits political use of publicly funded events. Yet the DA has promoted this event using their party branding.
The City of Cape Town claims to uphold the values of good governance, yet when evidence emerges suggesting abuse of public funds for political gain, it shirks its duty to investigate and correct wrongdoing.
The Director responsible for overseeing these events has failed in their obligation to act decisively when the issue was first raised, and we are officially calling for disciplinary charges in line with the Ethics Code of the City of Cape Town.
Public funds are not political slush funds. The people of Cape Town entrust us to manage their money responsibly. Any attempt to exploit that trust for partisan purposes must be met with swift and decisive action.
The joke may be at the Funny Festival, but the real punchline is on the ratepayer and it’s no laughing matter.
