GOOD Press statement by Suzette Little,
GOOD City of Cape Town Councillor & Caucus Chairperson
19 October 2022
A DA Ward Councillor and Sub-Council Chairperson today chaired a Sub-Council meeting, just days after he appeared in court on charges of rape and sexual assault.
The councillor was arrested last week following allegations that he sexually assaulted a young woman who approached him for a job in 2018.
On Monday he was released on R1 000 bail in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court, yet no immediate action has been taken by the Democratic Alliance.
While the DA claims that the matter is being dealt with internally, the party’s inconsistency in dealing with these matters is astounding.
The DA is willing to defend – and even pay for the legal costs – of a selected few within the party, while others are dealt with immediately.
In this case, the councillor has been charged with a serious crime and the double standards within the DA which allows him to stay in his position is an insult to all women.
The rate of gender-based violence and femicide cases in South Africa has reached disturbing levels and political parties can in no way appear to not take it seriously.
The GOOD party calls for urgent steps to be taken, as the councillor continues working in this same community in Hanover Park as if nothing happened. This is unacceptable.
