GOOD statement by Celeste Wannenburgh, GOOD: City of Cape Town Councillor
With a mandate from more than 70 000 voters in Cape Town to advance its policies of social, economic, spatial and environmental justice, the GOOD Party’s nine elected councillors have launched a simple and accessible mechanism to give residents a direct voice in the council.
The online mechanism presents an objective summary of the City’s key delivery gains and losses over the 2015-2020 period, sourced either from its own annual scorecard or reports of the Auditor-General, and asks residents’ advice on priorities over the next five years.
Information provided by residents will directly guide GOOD councillors’ objectives with respect to the City’s Integrated Development Plan.
Two key priorities have already been identified:
Deceleration of housing delivery – According to the City’s annual scorecards, delivery of housing almost doubled between 2016 and 2018, but has since declined from more than 8000 new housing opportunities in 2018 to just 3523 new housing opportunities in 2020.Fruitless and wasteful expenditure – According to the Auditor-General, Fruitless and Wasteful expenditure in the City increased from zero in 2016 to almost R20 million by 2020, while irregular expenditure increased from R2 000 to nearly R1 Billion.By participating in the online process residents will know at a glance what has been delivered and where emphasis is required to contribute to rolling back inequality and beginning to develop a just and sustainable city.

Providing a direct link for residents’ voices to be heard in the council chamber reflects the constructive role GOOD plans to play as an opposition party in Cape Town.
