CITY MUST ACT NOW TO PREVENT TRAGEDY IN KHAYELITSHA’S SST SECTION

3 November 2025

GOOD Statement by Roscoe Palm,

GOOD City of Cape Town Councillor

03 November 2025

The unfolding crisis in the SST section of Town Two, Khayelitsha, is both devastating and unacceptable. Families are being forced to abandon their homes as the very ground beneath them collapses, a direct result of failing sewer infrastructure.

Residents have described terrifying scenes as sinkholes open up beneath their shacks, releasing unbearable stench and endangering lives. At least eight such incidents have been reported recently, and it is only a matter of time before tragedy strikes if urgent action is not taken.

This is not a new problem. The same sewer line was reported on by GroundUp in January 2024, and despite repeated warnings and pleas from residents, the City has allowed the situation to deteriorate. The claim that the City cannot act without relocation is deeply concerning, safety cannot be conditional.

The City of Cape Town must immediately deploy emergency engineering teams to stabilise the affected area. A caring City would also provide safe, temporary accommodation for all displaced and at-risk families.

An investigation must be launched to determine whether this phenomenon threatens more homes and lives.

It is unacceptable that residents continue to live in danger due to collapsing infrastructure and bureaucratic delays. Communities like SST have long been treated as afterthoughts in the City’s planning and investment priorities.

Every person deserves safety and dignity, regardless of where they live. The lives of Khayelitsha residents are not disposable.
