Madame Speaker, it is no secret that our city is on the brink of bankruptcy and while the adjustment budget appears to have been creatively crafted to paint a pretty picture and install confidence, reality is that is plagued with issues.
The State of the Province Address reaffirmed what many of us already knew: building a transformed and equitable society is being neglected - sacrificed to maintain an illusion of prosperity. But illusions do not save lives, build futures, or serve the people of this province.
As we speak tonight on the necessity for environmental action let us take a moment to appreciate the tireless work of the firefighters currently fighting to preserve that nature for us and the generations to come.
The GOOD Party welcome the President’s commitment to the founding principles contained in the Government of National Unity, Statement of Intent – to reduce poverty, reduce the cost of living and address the indignity in which many of our people live. However, we must acknowledge that regardless of all the noise, both locally and internationally, South Africa has constitutional and moral obligations to transform society, narrow inequality and create a nation in which all citizens have a stake.
