As the GOOD party we take great pride in the City of Cape Town winning the 2023 UK Telegraph Travel Awards for best city in the world.
There is no doubt that our economy needs the much-needed boost from the tourism potential this accolade brings.
Cape Town’s diverse culture, beautiful landscapes and rich heritage is what makes us a unique city.
But let us also remember that as unique as we are, we also remain a city divided.
Most of our residents remain impoverished.
This award was given following a survey completed by tourists who frequent our most luxurious hotels, expensive restaurants, and pristine beaches.
These visitors do not frequent the “other-side” of our city.
The side that has been neglected by the Democratic Alliance – where crime, gangsterism, unemployment and homelessness are rife.
It is fair to say that if the visitors had experienced the Cape Flats, where economic opportunities are scarce, the outcome would not have been the same.
29 years into our country’s democracy, the disparity between rich and poor is stronger than ever in this award-winning city.
