BREEDE VALLEY CREDIT CONTROL POLICY: LEADERSHIP BLIND TO THE FINANCIAL STRUGGLES OF THE POOR

27 August 2024

GOOD Statement by Hubert Titus,
GOOD Councillor in the Breede Valley Municipality

27 August 2024

The Breede Valley Municipality is clearly blind to the struggles of the poorest in the community with the adoption of its new harsh debt-collecting methods.

The changes to the Municipality’s Credit Control Policy were recently pushed through by the DA and VF+ with their majority.

This will see 10% being taken from the already small R750 stipend that ward committee members receive as soon as their municipal accounts run into arrears.

Ward committees work to promote community participation by making the municipality aware of the needs and concerns of residents in their ward.

Instead of supporting these community members, who are vital to local governance, the DA has chosen to punish them directly amid a national cost-of-living crisis.

This move highlights that the DA is a party that has little understanding or concern for those who are barely surviving.
