The Bergrivier Municipality needs to ensure a swift investigation into the reports on its unfair labour practices which are based on blatant language discrimination.
The GOOD Party pushed for investigation after it came to light that the Municipality insisted on an Afrikaans assessment during a job interview, despite the candidate being Xhosa-speaking.
Not only the did job application not require Afrikaans, but there are in fact three official languages in the Western Cape, namely Xhosa, English and Afrikaans.
None of these are considered more important than the other.
Dismissing an applicant who writes and speaks two of these, simply because it does not include Afrikaans, is against the Western Cape Constitution.
We strongly condemn the language discrimination and welcome the commitment by Council to investigate the matter.
This once agains proves that South Africa continues to be faced with a massive task when it comes to meaningful transformation, especially in the workplace.
Incidents like these are unacceptable and reflect the discrimination still faced by many South Africans so long after the dawn of democracy.
