GOOD Statement by Brett Herron,
GOOD Secretary-General & Member of the Western Cape Parliament
14 January 2026
Schools reopened today across the Western Cape and across the country.
For many learners, this time of year brings nervous excitement, fresh beginnings, and the promise of opportunity.
But for thousands of children, there is no classroom to return to, only uncertainty and waiting.
As of 12 January, 7,200 learners in the Western Cape still had no school placement.
That is 7,200 young people starting the year in limbo, anxious about their futures, not because of a lack of effort or ability, but because the system has failed to provide enough space for them to continue their education.
The Western Cape government is quick to brand itself as the “best-run” province in the country. But a government that leaves thousands of children without access to schooling at the start of the academic year cannot credibly claim success.
This now raises the question: When will these children be placed in classrooms? How long will they have to delay their futures for?
Behind every number is a child whose education has been interrupted.
Each day without placement is a day of learning lost, time that cannot be recovered, and inequality that is further entrenched.
These learners are being denied the chance to reach their full potential, not by circumstance, but by systemic failure.
Education is not a privilege for the fortunate few; it is a constitutional right.
The government cannot celebrate the start of a new school year while so many children remain excluded!
A school year that begins with 7200 learners left behind is not a success. It serves as a warning, demanding urgent intervention.
