GEORGE MUNICIPALITY: WESTERN CAPE APPROVED COMPOST SITE CAUSES BIG STINK

21 February 2025

GOOD Statement by Rosa Louw,
GOOD George Municipality Councillor

21 February 2025

On behalf of the residents of Geelhoutboom, GOOD has laid an official complaint against a Commercial Compost Site operating on a George farm. The site has an unpleasant odour and increased the numbers of flies in the area, raising serious health concerns.

An investigation into the Organic Fertiliser Mixing Site revealed that it was approved by the Western Cape Department of Environmental Affairs. A follow-up site visit by an Environmental Health Practitioner confirmed the unpleasant compost odour and the presence of flies. The Health Practitioner confirmed that the wet compost was covered with nothing more than sawdust.

The site owner has been instructed to take steps to mitigate the odour and presence of flies. The Garden Route District Municipality has committed to conducting further oversite visits to the facility. As GOOD we will hold them to that commitment. Operations within the boundary of your property, even if approved should not adversely affect fellow residents.
