GOOD Statement by Brett Herron,
GOOD Secretary-General & Member of Parliament
9 June 2023
The GOOD party notes the decision of the Western Cape High Court which will see the by-election for Ward 27, Pacaltsdorp, in George go ahead.
GOOD challenged the declaration of a by-election as we believe there was no vacancy due to GOOD Councillor Richard Hector never having officially resigned.
However, we are ready to defend Councillor Hector’s position as the voters’ choice for ward councillor at the upcoming polls next month.
It’s clear that the matter has been driven by the DA Speaker, while surprisingly, the George Municipality also opted to get involved in this political fight.
The voters in Pacaltsdorp chose to elect a GOOD councillor to represent them and GOOD, and it’s unfortunate that the DA has chosen to abuse their role in government to subvert the choice of the voters.
Despite this, GOOD will not be deterred and remains committed to fighting for those who put their trust in us.
GOOD will also be fighting for the communities in Wards 16 and 20, where former councillors Theresa Jeyi and Neville Louw, defied their choice and succumbed to DA incentives to join the blue opposition.
It’s the voters who should have the right choose their councillors, and not the top political bosses who like to impose their preference on the people.
Clearly the DA is happily using Councillors, and the communities they represent, to fight their political fights and settle old scores. There is no doubt that these leaders have no real interest in actually addressing the problems in these under-serviced and under-developed communities.
GOOD will once again ask voters in these wards to lend the party their votes – and, should they prove disappointing, vote them out at the next opportunity.
