GOOD Statement by Brett Herron,
GOOD Secretary-General & Member of Parliament
28 September 2023
The GOOD Party notes the announcement by Stats SA confirming the creation of 39,000 jobs between March and June 2023.
Although any form of job creation should be seen as a victory, the reality is these jobs will do little to end the unemployment crisis we are facing as a country.
13.3 million citizens, who are of working age, are not economically active.
As GOOD we are also concerned by the creation of temporary or part-time jobs creating the illusion of a favourable employment market.
Although the total employment increased by 104,000 year-on-year, full-time employment, for the same period, decreased by 46,000 jobs.
Job creation is a step in the right direction but it is merely a band-aid for a more serious issue.
South Africa needs an economy that can generate jobs, but until that becomes a reality, we need a complete overhaul of our social security system.
The GOOD Party continues to call for the immediate institution of a Basic Income Grant of at least R999 a month.
We have done the research and through measures such as effective allocations, restructuring government, and some amendments to certain tax incentives we can ensure that those who need it are provided with assistance.
Government needs to ease the burden of millions of South Africans who are in desperate need of an income.
It can be done; it just needs the necessary political will.
