STATEMENT BY LEHLOHONOLO MTSHALI, DEPUTY-SECRETARY GENERAL OF GOOD AND GOOD GAUTENG COORDINATOR
9 APRIL 2020
CORONAVIRUS LOCKDOWN: HUNGER KNOWS NO PARTY POLITICAL AFFILIATION.
CITY OF JOHANNESBURG MUST DISTRIBUTE FOOD RELIEF FAIRLY
I have been inundated with calls from hungry families in poor communities across the City of Johannesburg.
Residents in Westbury, Riverlea and Coronation are literally crying out for help as they observe the City of Johannesburg Speaker, Nonceba Molwele, distributing food selectively.
The City of Johannesburg has an obligation to ensure that food relief reaches those who need it most and not to use food for party political purposes.
Hunger knows no party political affiliation and elected leaders must govern and assist anyone in need. I have reached out to the Speaker of the City of Johannesburg on Twitter urging her to assist families in need in a fair and equitable way.
I call on the Mayor and the Speaker of the City of Johannesburg to implement urgent measures to ensure that those who have lost their incomes, and who are facing starvation, are assisted by the City – regardless of where they live and who they may have voted for. The City should partner with community organisations and NGOs to ensure that food relief reaches across the metropole urgently and based on need.
