CONGRATULATIONS TO THE PEOPLE OF MAKANA

Statement by Brett Herron, Secretary-General of GOOD

15 January 2020

The Makhanda High Court order placing the Makana municipality under administration for failing to provide basic services to the community raises critical questions about the caliber of candidates political parties field in elections.

Poor service delivery is not restricted to Makana; maladministration, incompetence and corruption are national epidemics that undermine the Constitution and destroy the hopes of all citizens across the country for better lives.

With local government elections due next year, the dissolution of a non-performing municipality by a court is an important victory for civil society and the principles of competence and accountability.

Next year’s elections afford South Africans an opportunity to vote for representatives competent to contribute to societal solutions rather than those whose only competence appears to be to exacerbate divisions and problems.
