GOOD PROPOSES A NEW PARTNERSHIP MODEL FOR AGRICULTURAL LAND REFORM

Statement by Mark Rountree, National Policy Officer for GOOD

27 November 2019

GOOD is dismayed about the high proportion of failed agricultural projects. Outside Mooi River in KZN, 54 of 57 land restitution farms are reportedly no longer operational

We cannot have land reform and ignore what happens after title is handed over.  South Africa’s farms need to continue producing food and sustaining jobs. This is why GOOD proposed a new partnership approach for ensuring successful land reform.

GOOD’s policy for land ownership and agricultural land reform (https://bit.ly/2DjvnzB ) proposes that agricultural beneficiaries enter in to partnership programmes with both existing commercial farmers and the retailers or exporters who purchase their produce. These partnerships are proven to improve skills development and enable commercial success by ensuring direct access to markets for emerging farmers.

GOOD also believes that access to agricultural extension officers to assist with improved skills transfer, more efficient technology and assistance in navigating legislation is critical.

A GOOD government can #FIXSA.
