STATEMENT BY BRETT HERRON TO WESTERN CAPE PARLIAMENT
14 November 2019
GOOD WELCOMES THE ADOPTION OF ITS POLICIES FOR THE WESTERN CAPE’S PROVINCIAL SAFETY PLAN
This afternoon in the Western Cape Provincial Legislature, GOOD’s Secretary General, Brett Herron, thanked the Premier Alan Winde and MEC for Social Services, Sharna Fernandez, for adopting GOOD’s policy on community safety.
As Herron noted, “the DA’s ‘OneSAforAll’ 2019 manifesto promised to overhaul SAPS and provide provincial policing. Although many international examples have proven that policing alone cannot solve crime, not once in the many pages the DA’s manifesto’s security plans does it even consider improving social services to tackle the underlying causes of crime in our neighbourhoods.”
He then quoted from GOOD’s 2019 plan to Fix South Africa, which promised to “address the root causes of crime by ensuring improved, professional policing works hand in hand with effective social services and social development.”
Herron said he was pleased that the Premier and MEC for Social Development spoke about adopting GOOD policy in the Provincial Safety Plan and said that he supports their revised plan to provide improved policing combined with more effective social services, as had been announced in the Cape Argus on the 13th November.
He also said he hoped that the parliament would “soon be provided with a copy of this yet-to-be-seen plan” and offered to leave a copy of the GOOD manifesto with the MEC and Premier “in case you need any other bits.” Thus far, only a short promo video alluding to a new plan for safety has been released by the Premier. No actual plan has been released as yet.
Herron ended by congratulating the DA on abandoning its manifesto, saying that “I agree with you that our policies will make this a GOOD and safe place to live.”
